What is your WHY?

This is mine.

Bulldog face
Georgia Penelope Wigglebottom

Her name is Georgia Penelope Wiggglebottom and from the moment I first looked into her eyes at just 4 weeks old, I knew I had found my purpose in life. She was my Heart Dog, my furry Soulmate, my Best Friend and my Child. She filled me with a joy and love that I never knew existed and set my life on a completely new path from where I was originally heading. Getting to be her Mom was the most amazing gift, and losing her to cancer when she was only 5 years old, was the deepest heartbreak.

It seemed impossible that a heart so shattered could ever heal – even a little bit. And it was as if I had lost a piece of myself when she died. The anger I felt knowing that she had to deal with a monster like cancer and be taken from this world too soon was so strong at times, and the guilt that I couldn’t prevent this from happening or cure her lymphoma was all-encompassing. It felt like I had failed her and I didn’t know how it would be possible to survive such intense grief and pain.

Luckily, I had already found connection with an online Pet Cancer Support Group and it was this community of like-minded pet parents – peers – who listened to me, supported me, cried with me, and eventually helped me find my way out of the darkness.

I have never forgotten what it meant to me to be able to honestly and openly share my thoughts, feelings, fears, regrets and favorite memories with other pet parents who truly understood and never passed judgment. A place of pure, unconditional support.  An outlet for my grief that was even more vital to my healing than the family and friends physically in my life. And in this amazing space for conversation and shared experience, I not only found my own path to healing but also learned the value of helping to lift others up during their struggles as well.

So when people ask me why I choose to be a Pet Loss Support facilitator and resource to other grieving pet parents, THIS is why. I know the power of peer-based support and know first-hand that from the deepest grief can come immense growth and some surprising blessings. And YES, you CAN heal even the most broken of hearts.
